3 Daily Habits To Keep Your Brain Sharp

Our daily routines have a tremendous impact on brain health. Small consistent actions that support your brain’s needs help maintain cognitive abilities now and reduce decline later in life.

Here are 3 science-backed habits to easily incorporate into your day for a sharper mind:

Read and write regularly

Reading strengthens connections between brain cells in areas related to language, focus, memory and visual/spatial processing. Just 30 minutes daily reaps major benefits. Writing things down also fires up brain circuits, helping cement information. Keep reading and journaling.

Exercise for 30 minutes

A half hour of heart-pumping aerobic exercise allows more blood to flow to the brain, nourishing it with oxygen and nutrients. This fuels the growth of new neurons and connections in the memory and learning centers. Any cardio works, so find activities you enjoy and move daily.

 

Learn something new

When you challenge your brain by actively learning novel skills and information, you build cognitive reserve - extra brain capacity that helps withstand aging and health issues. Take a class, read non-fiction books, master a new hobby, play brain games, work puzzles, or practice memorization techniques for 30 minutes daily to keep your brain adapting and growing.

Other Lifestyle Tips for a Sharp Brain:

●  Alternate between focused thinking and meditation. Both strengthen different brain circuits.

●  Get at least 7 hours of quality sleep nightly so your brain can repair and regenerate.

●  Eat a Mediterranean diet full of antioxidants and anti-inflammatory foods to nourish the brain and protect neurons.

●  Stay socially engaged. Relationships and mental stimulation keep the brain flexible.

●  Manage stress through relaxing practices like deep breathing, yoga, forest bathing and spending time in nature. Chronic stress damages the brain.

●  Limit alcohol and avoid smoking, as these impair cognition.

●  Protect hearing and get treated for hearing loss, which is linked to dementia.
