How to Maintain a Healthy Microbiome

The microbiome is a complex ecosystem of trillions of bacteria, fungi, and viruses that inhabit our bodies. These microbial communities work together to keep us healthy, from aiding digestion to regulating our immune systems.

But did you know that you can actively support the health of your microbiome? Here's what you need to know about maintaining a healthy microbiome.

What Is A Microbiome?

The microbiome consists of all the microorganisms that live on and inside our bodies. Our skin and digestive tract are home to most of these microbes, but they’re also found in other areas like our mouths, noses, and even eyes. While some bacteria are bad for us, the majority are beneficial and help us stay healthy.

How To Maintain A Healthy Microbiome

Maintaining a healthy microbiome starts with eating a balanced diet full of whole foods like fruits, vegetables, lean proteins, whole grains, and unsaturated fats. Eating prebiotic-rich foods such as onions, garlic, artichokes, and bananas can also encourage the growth of beneficial bacteria in your gut. Additionally, probioticsβ€”live beneficial microorganismsβ€”can be found in fermented food items such as yogurt or kimchi. Taking probiotic supplements is another way to introduce beneficial bacteria into your system if these food items aren't available or suitable for your dietary needs.

Lastly, managing stress levels is essential for keeping your microbiome balanced since chronic stress has been linked to an imbalance in gut bacteria. Incorporating relaxation techniques like yoga or meditation can help reduce stress levels while also helping maintain a healthy balance in your system.

Takeaway

A healthy microbiome is critical for overall physical health –– from aiding digestion to regulating our immune systems. So, it’s important to make sure yours is functioning optimally! With the right lifestyle choices, such as eating whole foods rich in prebiotics/probiotics and managing stress levels through relaxation techniques such as yoga/meditation, you can maintain a balanced microbiome that will keep you feeling strong and energized!
