Use Your Resistance to Delve Deeper into Self Discovery

I don’t know about you, but the energy has been intense lately! The full moon in Pisces was very powerful for me and took me out a bit. There was a lot of emotional intensity and a sense of chaos and confusion. As always when this comes up for me, I did a little digging into what’s going on astrologically and realized that seven planets are in a sort of backward motion. This means we are more likely to want to spend time alone, rest, and reflect on our choices. But I interpreted this energy as resistance to what I need to get done. I felt totally derailed off my normal routine of productivity. But now I realize that I was judging myself and that this is just a normal cycle to grow through. This was another chance to become aware of my self-imposed limitations and implement new strategies to overcome them. Yay!

In today’s blog, I wanted to examine how our resistance manifests, and bring a different perspective of nature’s cycles, and how we can move through them with flow and without judging ourselves so harshly.

Resistance, for me, comes in many forms. It comes in the form of excessive sleep, drinking alcohol, exercising, walking the dogs, reading, etc. and while many of these things are healthy and might not seem averse, it is the intent behind them that is the manifestation of resistance. Many times when we get honest about our motivations, intentions, productivity, and the like, we also get very judgmental with ourselves. We seize the opportunity to compare ourselves to others, to place expectations on ourselves, and if anything doesn't live up or line up we beat up on ourselves for it. This is where I was.

Yes over those days, there were some not so healthy behaviors, but there was also been some much-needed rest, rejuvenation, contemplation, and ease. We forget that it is the constant go go go, that throws us into imbalance, and dis-ease. And yet ironically, when we take some time to disconnect from our to-do list, we beat up on ourselves for taking the much-needed disconnection. Let's explore this concept of disconnecting to reconnect.

As humans on this earth, it is actually harder for us to be disconnected; disconnected from social media, from technology, from the news, from the hustle and bustle of daily life. For many, stillness is the biggest challenge. Maybe there are small movements of stillness for 5-15min a day for their meditation practice, but that is it.

Let's say you actually get 8 hours of sleep. That is stillness, then you have your daily mediation practice. That is stillness. Let's be generous and round that up to 9 hours of the day combining the two. That leaves 2/3 of the day, 15 hours a day of push, pull, go, go, go stimulation. This is not the natural state of man that supports a healthy mind, body, and spirit. It is only within the last 100 years, that this schedule has become routine. So now, let's again contemplate disconnecting to reconnect.

We have established that for this conversation disconnecting means releasing yourself from your 21st-century distractions. Now, what does it mean to reconnect?

Reconnection is the connection with your breath. Reconnections is the awareness of the ground underneath your feet, the awareness of how the earth is in constant support of your physical body. Reconnection is feeling the wind on your skin, the sound the wind makes as it rushes past your ears, syncing your breath to each gust like the tides of the ocean. Reconnection is tuning in to the rhythms of the earth that are as constant as the second hand of a clock. Always there in the background like your heartbeat. This is the connection that enlivens, rejuvenates, supports. This is the connection that lowers your cortisol, that lowers your blood pressure, that lowers inflammation, that heals dis-ease, and prolongs your life on this planet. It is the connection between your human body and the planet that perpetuates life. It is a symbiotic relationship, meaning mutually beneficial.

The earth gives us support, nourishment, oxygen, and we in turn radiate love, gratitude, compassion, patience, back out. Maybe the latter is not that prevalent, but it is there. It can be more. With awareness and intention, there can always be more. Love is limitless. It is ubiquitous. It travels throughout space and time. It is the connection that ties us all, all beings together on this planet and beyond to the outer galaxies.

So, disconnect to reconnect. To be a human on the planet at this time in history is so dynamic, so lush, multidimensional, and it does not have to be depleting, draining, stressful, etc. It is a choice as to how you allow your participation in this world to affect your energy. It is all too easy to get swept up in the flow of chaos, instead of the flow of connection and love. So the reminder to you today is to disconnect to reconnect. Daily yes. But ever more so throughout your day. Choose how, when, why, and to whom you will give your energy. Be picky, be selfish, for the greater good.

My suggestion is to take 5 minutes of every hour to disconnect to reconnect in addition to your daily meditation. So even though this only adds another 60 minutes of connection to your day, it is more spread out. It is a regular reconnect practice. It can be a walk, a breath practice, a few minutes soaking up the sun on a quick break from work. Just 5 minutes every hour to remember your connection with Earth, with Spirit, with your body, with the present moment.

I hope this little burb inspires you to implement a more nurturing practice into your day. Remember, it’s not about being perfect, it’s just about much we can stay in alignment.
